Marine snow is a term first introduced by American naturalist, marine biologist, and explorer William Beebe in the 1930s. It describes the continuous shower of organic and inorganic particles observed from his bathysphere. In the ocean, marine snow plays a crucial role in transporting nutrient-rich matter from the photic zone near the surface to the ocean floor. Continuum Ocean Snow replicates this natural process by providing a rich source of both organic and inorganic nutrients simultaneously. It offers aragonite-based inorganic minerals, along with marine proteins and lipids in ratios essential for coral growth.

Use in Aquarium Keeping

Ocean Snow is an excellent way to supply both organic and inorganic nutrients to filter-feeding invertebrates of all types. It is particularly beneficial for:

  • Hard and soft corals
  • Tube worms
  • Clams
  • Sponges
  • Tunicates

Feeding Recommendations:

  • Vary the types and sizes of foods delivered into the reef aquarium.
  • Consider other Continuum foods for rotation, such as Coral Exponential, Micro•Blast, Zoo•Blast, and Phyto•Blast.
  • Occasionally blend these foods or use them as soaks for other foods to provide variety, simulating natural feeding conditions.
  • Feed at different times of the day, ensuring to feed at night for nocturnal feeders. Many corals extend their tentacles and mesenterial filaments at night, using nematocysts to capture prey or entrapping prey with sticky tentacles and mucus before drawing it into their mouths.

Directions and Protocol

  • Shake well prior to use.
  • Add 1 capful (5 ml) per 50 US-gallons (200 L) of marine aquarium water 2 to 3 times per week.
  • Can be used as a food soak or added to food soak.

Expert Use

For optimal results, target feeding is recommended:

  1. Use a turkey baster, pipette, or similar tool to release the product upstream of the animals being fed.
  2. Avoid touching corals with the tool.
  3. Do not insert the tool into the bottle or allow aquarium water to enter the bottle to prevent introducing bacteria, which could accelerate decomposition.

Steps for Target Feeding:

  • Pour the appropriate amount of Ocean Snow into a cup.
  • Use the tool to feed from the cup.
  • Feed all that you pour and do not return any unused product to the container to avoid contamination.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure the health and vitality of your aquarium's inhabitants while replicating the natural nutrient cycles of the ocean.
